Arial Drop Test

Goal

Science Team wanted to ensure that the 12 pound parachute would slow the descent of the ARIAL probe stably and sufficiently so as to avoid damaging ARIAL.

Procedure

Science Team transported ARIAL to the Kibbie Dome, and the experiment was performed on the east side catwalk.

  1. ARIAL's pump, pressure valve, and batteries were put into the capsule. The bottle array was suspended below it, and the parachute above it.
  2. The entire assembly was then lifted to the top of a catwalk at a height of approximately 80 ft.
  3. The ARIAL was dropped and her flight was recored on video from the ground.

Results

No damage was done to the bottle array, the capsule, or any of the internal equipment, making the drop test a complete success.
