Wiki Bio Tutorial

Step 1:

  • Welcome to VAST!
  • I often use google tools so it is critical for everyone in VAST to have access to google. First go to google sign up page if you do not already have a google account and follow the directions.
  • If you already have a google account, skip this step.

Step 2:

  • The next step is to create a VAST wiki account.
  • Go to http://uirise.wikidot.com/system:join
  • You are going to use a secrete password to join the site.
    • If you already have a wikidot account, click on the second "log in" link on the page and follow the steps.
    • If you need to create a new account, click the second "create a new account" link and follow the steps.
    • Input the secret password.
  • Now you should be signed in to the site.

Step 3:

  • Now you are ready to create your bio on the wiki website.
  • Click on the "People/Contacts" link on the side bar of the main page.
  • Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the "edit" link box.
  • A text editor box will appear, copy and paste the text between the quotes in alphabetical order by last name under your first choice sub-system and replace first and last with your first and last name (this will be your bio link):
    • "++ [[[first_last | First Last (role) ]]]" (do not copy the quotes but do include the plus signs and brackets)
      • If you do not have a role, leave off the part with the parentheses
    • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click save.
  • Copy the template bio.
    • Bio Template:

**Bio**
Where did you grow up?
What do you like to do on your spare time?
What are some highlights of your past accomplishments.

**Future**
What are your plans for the future (after graduation)?

**Education**
//Major:// Your major here
//Graduation Date:// Your expected graduation date here
//Class Level:// (freshman, sophomore …)

**Contact Information**
//Phone:// your phone number
//e-mail:// your e-mail
//Google ID:// Google user name

  • Click on the gray link of your name that should now be on the people page.
    • If no link exists double check to make sure that your link exactly matches the format described in this tutorial
  • It will bring up a page that says the page does not exist and it will ask you if you want to create the page - click the link that says create a new page.
  • Paste the bio template you copied before into the editor window
  • Answer all the questions and fill in all your information
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click save.

Step 4:

  • Now you are ready to add a picture. Find a good (clean!) picture of yourself and click the ‘files’ box at the bottom of the page.
  • Click on the ‘upload new file’ link at the very bottom of the page. Before you upload, make sure that the picture is about 20-40 Kb- (bigger pictures will slow the site down and fill up the page).
  • Once you have found a small picture on your picture, click on the browse box and find the file on your computer. In the box labeled ‘Destination file name’ type your first name and last initial. For example: Austin Howard would be ‘austinh’ (remember this because you will use it later).
  • In the description box, type your full name and ‘bio picture’. Then click ‘Upload file!’.
  • Now click the 'edit' box again to go back to editing the page.
  • At the very top of your bio paste the following: " [[f>image http://uirise.wikidot.com/local--files/(first_last)/(name of your picture from before)]] " (again don't include the quotes)
    • Change the text in the parentheses to match your name and title of the picture file
    • See Austin’s bio if you have questions about this part.
  • Click save at the bottom of the page when you are done editing.

Step 5:

  • Check to make sure your bio looks ok and that the format matches Austin’s bio.
  • If not try to make any corrections until it matches. For general questions about formatting and linking, see the link at the bottom of the page when editing a page called ‘wiki syntax description’.
  • If you can’t figure something out, no worries, just e-mail Brandy at moc.liamg|semloh.m.ydnarb#moc.liamg|semloh.m.ydnarb with any questions.

Step 6:

  • The last step is to complete the VAST questionnaire and send it to me.
  • Copy and paste the VAST questionnaire in a blank e-mail addressed to moc.liamg|yeitsua#moc.liamg|yeitsua
  • VAST questionnaire: goals-questionnaire
